Creating Your Own Layered Embellishments

Hello and Happy Friday 3 Birds Fans! Juliana Michaels here with a scrapbook page and tutorial on how to create your own layered embellishments using pieces from the Graceful Season 3D Embellishment Kit and Sticky Sparkly Glitter & Foil Kit.Happiness Right Here Layout by Juliana Michaels for 3Birds Studio 01

The layout begins with a simple design of 3 strips of patterned paper positioned to create the base for the photo, journaling and other embellishments. I fussy cut the large floral pattern from a piece of patterned paper and placed it along the right hand side of the photo. I used the scrap from this floral piece to mat my photo. Then, I layered pieces from the Sticky Sparkly Glitter & Foil Kit to create the cluster on the bottom right hand side.

Happiness Right Here Layout by Juliana Michaels for 3Birds Studio 02

The journaling piece is from the 6x6 Paper Pad and was the perfect size to add to the left hand side of my photo to begin to balance the fussy cut floral piece and chipboard cluster on the right hand side.

Although this helped, I still felt like I needed something for the upper left hand corner of the photo to finish the layout. That is when I decided to create my own embellishment using a combination of pieces from the Graceful Season 3D Embellishment Kit and Sticky Sparkly Glitter & Foil Kit.

TUTORIAL | CREATING YOUR OWN LAYERED EMBELLISHMENT

I began by selecting the banner chipboard piece and foil 3D flower sticker. I liked the idea of creating a small vertical banner to hang on the upper left corner of the photo, so I cut two small pieces from patterned paper to create the banner.

Creating Your Own Layered Embellishment Tutorial by Juliana Michaels for 3 Birds Studio 01

Next, I positioned the chipboard banner on top of the patterned paper banner.

Then I placed the flower sticker on top of it, but I didn't like how the banner stuck out so far on each side of the flower.Creating Your Own Layered Embellishment Tutorial by Juliana Michaels for 3 Birds Studio 04

My solution, was to cut the chipboard banner, removing a small section in the middle. Creating Your Own Layered Embellishment Tutorial by Juliana Michaels for 3 Birds Studio 05 I then placed the newly cut chipboard banner back into place on the patterned paper.Creating Your Own Layered Embellishment Tutorial by Juliana Michaels for 3 Birds Studio 06After I placed the flower sticker in position, I was pleased with how the banner didn't stick out so far any more and the sticker covered up the modification I did to the chipboard piece.

Milk Carton Candy Tote

Hi Everyone! Jana Eubank here. What better way to tell someone “Thank You” than with a pile of their favorite candy inside a darling container? I created this cute Milk Carton Candy Tote using my digital die cutting machine and the soft palette of supplies from the Graceful Season collection.

Milk Carton by Jana Eubank for 3 Birds Studio 01

For the tote, I used the aqua paper with the scattered daisies a long floral sticker and the word “Dream” from the Sticky Sparkly Glitter & Foil set. In between each letter I added white pearl stickers from my stash.

Milk Carton by Jana Eubank for 3 Birds Studio 03

The milk cartons were created with an aqua/white geometric patterned paper to coordinate with the tote. The smaller pink/white diagonal stripe paper accents tie in with the wide diagonal stripe on the tote.

I tied the cartons closed with a length of white cotton string and added the “Thank You” tag from the Sticky Sparkly Glitter & Foil Set. When using a sticker for a tag, be sure to pop the piece out of the carrier sheet, leaving the backing in place so that it can dangle and move. (This will prevent it from adhering itself inadvertently to your project.) I couldn’t resist embellishing the tag and added a few more white pearls and 3D flower stickers. The best part of creating this treat container was decorating it. I even decorated the back!

Stitching On Your Scrapbook Pages

Hi everyone! It's Robbie again today to share another project with the Graceful Season Collection. The last layout I shared was very feminine with ribbon and lots of flowers. In that post, I mention the versatility of this collection and today I'll show you a very different look with the same collection. Today, I took the look in a masculine direction with not a bow or a flower in sight.

Robbie Herring Epic Story Scrapbook Page for 3 Birds Studio 01

For this layout about my son's senior design airplane, I found that the black and cream bold paper was the perfect choice. I really love how this paper runs corner to corner and I wanted to continue that throughout my page. You will see in the photo that I chose to stitch floss with some of the colors in the photos.

DESIGNER TIP | STITCHING ON YOUR SCRAPBOOK PAGES

Use a ruler to line the stitch piercing spots. The stripes that are already on the background make this very easy! Also, when you do the stitching, keep it simple. I only added piercing places at each end, instead of making true stitches along each line. Same look... little effort! When I do this technique, I use all 6 strands of the floss.

Robbie Herring Epic Story Scrapbook Page for 3 Birds Studio 02

I pulled the circle piece from the Quilled Cardmaking Kit. I thought it would make the perfect frame for the picture of the plane in flight. I made sure to line it up with the stripes going in the same direction as the background paper and the stitching.

Robbie Herring Epic Story Scrapbook Page for 3 Birds Studio 03

I mentioned before that I like to raise a picture up to make it more visible when using lots of embellishing. In this case with a 3 photo layout, I used the same technique to help make the group photo be the focal point.

DESIGNER TIP | DEAD SPACE

Don't be afraid to use 'dead space' on your photos to add embellishments or titles. You can see in this photo that I did the title over the photos. It is also a good way to cover up or distract from things in the photo that you don't like.

To finish off the page, I added embellishments and journaling strips. I was sure to add some of the embellishments in the same direction as all the other elements, but to also add the journal strips and a couple of embellishments horizontally. Everything in the same direction can make it lose impact.

1950's Photo and A Scrapbook Page

Hello 3 Birds friends! It’s Mary Ann here today with a layout using an old black & white photo of my mom and dad from the 1950’s. I love that all the papers and embellishments in the Graceful Season collection work just as beautifully with a photo that is over 60 years old as much as a photo taken last week!

Mary Ann Jenkins Mom And Dad Scrapbook Page for 3 Birds Studio 01

To start my layout, I cut a 9” square from one of the pretty patterned papers, then cut rectangles from the journaling card paper in the 6x6 Graceful Season Premium Pad.

I then decorated each of the journaling cards with pieces from the Sticky Sparkly Glitter & Foil set, stickers from the Graceful Season 3D Embellishment Kit and even did a little fussy cutting of one of the pretty patterned papers for under the black & white photo.

Quilling Anyone?

Quilling anyone? Have you ever tried it? I admit, I was nervous to even attempt it, but 3 Birds Design Quilled Cardmaking Kit makes it easy. Katrina here today and I have a card that I made from the Cardmaking kit. There is an instruction booklet that tells you how to start on your quilling adventure. Plus, there are lots of supplies in there, so if you don’t get it right the first time, you can try again.

Katrina Hunt Enjoy Your Day Card for 3 Birds Studio 01I wanted to make a little scene on my card and I knew that I wanted to use the quilled cloud that was in there. Plus, it was good practice to make different sizes of the circles. I made my cloud and set it to the side to dry. You will have to do this with anything that you quill and then place it into your project later.

Katrina Hunt Enjoy Your Day Card for 3 Birds Studio 02I then set to work making the snail. He is easy, so don’t be afraid to try! I love that everything is included in the kit. Here you can see, I used a piece of the scalloped quilling paper to create my grass.

Katrina Hunt Enjoy Your Day Card for 3 Birds Studio 03The card that was in the kit had a window precut out of it, so I just backed it with a piece of paper from the Graceful Season 6x6 Mini pad. Then I created my scene on that. The banner, card, frame around the cutout and tag all come in the kit. I love that basically everything was included, so that I really had to add was some adhesive and twine!

If you have never tried quilling, you should jump in! I loved it, it looks really neat, and isn’t as hard as it looks like it might be! I have a layout over on my personal blog (Paper Scissors and Glue) that uses an item from the Graceful Season collection that has an element from the Quilled Cardmaking Kit on it too. You have to love products that can do double duty!

A Quilled Wedding Card

Hi Everyone! Jana Eubank here. I have a friend getting married in a couple of weeks and wanted to honor her special day by creating her a custom wedding card. I pulled out the beautiful Graceful Season Quilled Cardmaking Kit and came up with this design.

Wedding Card by Jana Eubank for 3 Birds Studio 01

First, I selected my card base. I decided on the purple card with the oval window. On the front of the card, I adhered the green oval frame piece into place and then used my sewing matching to stitch along the white line of the die cut. I also added a matching stitched border around the edge of the card front.

Next I needed a sentiment for my card. I chose the “Congratulations” pennant and “Better Together” 3D sticker and placed them at the bottom of the oval window. Next, I adhered the banner die cut across the top of the card. I love how the banner ties all of the colors together. For a bit more dimension and detail, I added a few small, white pearl stickers from my stash to the banner and 3D sentiment sticker.

Wedding Card by Jana Eubank for 3 Birds Studio 02

Next, I used the quilling tool to create three coordinating flowers. I grouped them together above the top right corner of the pennant along with several of the leaf die cuts from the kit. Here’s a closer look. Aren’t they fun?!

Wedding Card by Jana Eubank for 3 Birds Studio 04

I wanted a pop of color to show through the oval window. Inside I placed a 4x6 stitched rectangle of aqua patterned paper (from the 6x6 Premium Paper Pad). At the top of this rectangle, I placed another die cut banner. I just love the sentiments in this kit! They make card making so easy!

I created the wedding couple using a digital die cutting machine, gray cardstock, and the 6x6 paper pads. I love how the accents of purple foil paper add the perfect amount of sparkle … making this image extra-special!

Just Because Quilled Card and Pillow Boxes

Hi! It's Robbie today to share my latest project with you. For my project today, I used the Quilled Cardmaking Kit. Let me tell you, it is TERRIFIC! It is loaded with quilling strips and so many different cards and sentiment pieces to make card making.  It not only makes it easy, but it allows you to create fabulous cards that you will be happy to share! I've enjoyed making this so much, that I created another set to share with you and you can see it on my blog - Just The Scrap!

I also created a couple of little pillow boxes to go with the card. The Quilled Card Kit is great for other projects, too. It perfectly coordinates with the rest of the Graceful Season Collection.

Included in the kit are shadowbox cards. These are great and easy to assemble. I should mention here that I've never done Quilling before, but also included is a really easy to follow instructions for both the quilling and card assembly. Want more? Well, the tools you need are in there, too!

The scalloped pieces are fun to use in other ways, too. I added the scalloped pieces to the inside of the card for a bit of extra detail.

Just Because Card by Robbie Herring for 3 Birds Studio using Graceful Season

I want to share couple of details that I figured out to make it easy for me to attach everything to the shadow boxes. Since these aren't flat, I found it helpful to build my flower and leaves on top of small punched circle. When making the leaves, I followed the included directions, but left a small amount of paper at the end. I attached it to the bottom of the flower as shown. By doing it this way, I was able to attach the leaves without worrying about glueing them to the box.

Robbie Herring Just Because Pillow Box detail 1 by Robbie Herring for 3 Birds Studio using Graceful Season

For this little flower bud cluster, I started by folding one piece of the green paper in half and curling the ends for each cluster. I added the other pieces to the inside of the fold and then glued the fold closed. I liked the way that this hid all the end pieces so that the cluster looked neater. The basic instructions for all the pieces are include in the instructions. I simply tweaked them to suit my personal idea.

2 Sweet Little Cards

Hello 3 Birds friends! Today I have 2 sweet little cards to share with you, both would be perfect to have on hand for those last minute occasions when you need a quick note to send.

For the “Say What” card, I punched circles from the beautiful papers in the Graceful Season 6x6 Premium Pad, using various sizes of circle punches. I added the cute “Say What” layered sticker from the Graceful Season 3D Embellishment kit, glued on a few sequins, and to finish, stitched a few rows with my sewing machine.

My banner card was made by cutting two 1 ½” wide strips of paper, notching the ends for the banner shape, then adding the pretty “Hello There” 3D sticker.

Jumping Into Altered Projects

Do altered projects scare you? Or do you just jump right in? Katrina here, and I am a jump in kind of girl. With the Graceful Season collection, it’s easy to create something altered, since everything is coordinated! I am sharing an altered canvas here today.

Do More Canvas by Katrina Hunt for 3 Birds Studio

I started by covering the canvas with the green paper, using matte medium gel. This is a thick type of glue that works great for canvas work. I tend to make the edges of the canvas look as nice as I can, by either wrapping the paper around to the back, or for example mitering the corner like you see here. Kind of like wrapping a present!

Do More Canvas by Katrina Hunt for 3 Birds Studio detail 1

I knew I wanted to have a big bow on this canvas. The papers made me want one! So, I cut one out of a file on my Silhouette and finally decided that I wanted to place it at the top of the canvas. I embellished the middle of the bow with that cute little glitter, sparkly chipboard flower. There were several I could have used, but I liked the way this one looked.

Do More Canvas by Katrina Hunt for 3 Birds Studio detail 2

The canvas was longer than 12 inches, so I covered the extra by punching three borders out of various papers and layering them at the bottom. I then added some chipboard, popped up with foam adhesive for a little embellishment to the area.

Do More Canvas by Katrina Hunt for 3 Birds Studio detail 3I loved this quote, so I cut it out and then backed it with various scraps of paper to make the wording stand out. I added the little pointing finger chipboard to the “o” on the word “of”. It just seemed to fit right there perfectly.

Using Your Scraps and Keeping It Simple Thank You Card

Hugs everyone - Juliana Michaels here! I don't know about you, but it can be a real challenge for me to make the first cut into a piece of paper. It doesn't matter the size. There is just something about that beautiful sheet of paper that makes me want to keep it whole! However, once that first cut has been made, I am able to let go and start cutting and creating. The Celebrate scrapbook page that I shared with you last week produced some lovely scraps from cutting papers and I saved them, with the idea of using them to create some cards. I almost always end up making more than one card when I have left over paper scraps and that was the case this time.

When I started working on these cards, I knew I wanted to keep it simple. To help me do this, I copied the design of the first card when I made my second card. I didn't want the cards to be exactly the same, so I used different papers and a different sentiment on the second card. Today I am sharing the first card I made with you here. When you are finished, I hope you will stop by my blog - 17turtles - to see the other card using the same design with different papers and a different sentiment. You Are So Loved Card by Juliana Michaels for 3 Birds Studio

I created my card base from a piece of white cardstock and cut it to a standard A2 size. Next, I took the gray floral pattern scrap from my Celebrate layout and cut it to 4.25" x 5.5" to cover the front of my card. To embellish the card I used some metal dies to die cut the polaroid frame and hearts from other scraps.

To create the cluster in the top right corner, I overlapped the die cut hearts and used double sided foam tape to adhere them and give them more dimension. The small flower was hand cut from the gray floral pattern and adhered with the foam tape as well.

You Are So Loved Card by Juliana Michaels for 3 Birds Studio 2

I matted the polaroid frame and chipboard sentiment with black cardstock to help them stand out more.  For the cluster on the bottom, I adhered the heart die cuts and then layered the matted chipboard sentiment on top of them. The final touches that I added were the jewels to the center of the flower and at the bottom right hand corner and a small twine bow.

Using Items Beyond Their Intended Purpose and Other Great Tips

Hi everyone! It's Robbie Herring, here today to share my first project with the Graceful Season Collection. I know from seeing the other designer's project, you already know how versatile this collection is and how it's works with everyone's individual styles. Just like the other ladies, I'm loving this collection and all the possibilities it offers!

In addition to showing you my first 3 Birds Studio layout, I wanted to share a few simple tips that I often use when designing my pages.

Love Scrapbook Page by Robbie Herring for 3 Birds Studio

DESIGNER TIP | USING ITEMS BEYOND THEIR INTENDED PURPOSE

Notice the little squares of paper that I built my design around. These are intended to be journaling cards, but I often use journaling cards instead of patterned paper for design work. These have lots of variation in pattern, which makes them perfect for adding interest to a page.

Love Scrapbook Page by Robbie Herring for 3 Birds Studio detail 1

DESIGNER TIP | GROUNDING THE DESIGN

Especially when using soft colors, I try to make sure that there is something included in my design that is dark or heavy. In this case, I did both. My layout is bordered with the navy blue paper, which also serves as a frame. For those of you that are new to my work, you might not know that I'm a ribbon addict. You will find ribbon on most of my projects. I chose this ribbon because it matched the darkest coral color in the patterned paper. By placing it where I did, it did double duty by adding weight and helping draw the eye down the page to the photo.

Love Scrapbook Page by Robbie Herring for 3 Birds Studio detail 2

DESIGNER TIP | FOCUS ON THE PHOTO

It can be easy to lose the focus on the photo with all the paper work and embellishments around and on top of it. Adding the frame, helps to draw you into the photo, but one of the tricks that I have been using for years is to raise the photo off the page. I am always a little surprised at what a difference it can make. What I use to raise the photo varies, but foam dots or foam tape is a really quick and easy way to accomplish it.

Total Fave and Layering Elements For Added Dimension

Hello friends! It’s Mary Ann Jenkins here today to share my first project for 3 Birds Studio, using the brand new Graceful Season collection. I know you are going to love Graceful Season. The colors are so rich and vibrant, with beautiful patterns and designs! I have a great tip to share on how to layer different elements to give your projects some eye-catching dimension. I used this tip on the layout I am sharing with you here today and on a card that is up on my blog (i rock paper & scissors).

Total Fave Scrapbook Page by Mary Ann Jenkins for 3 Birds Studio

To start my layout, I chose papers and embellishments that coordinated with my photo. The Graceful Season collection has three different color schemes, so I mixed and matched piece by piece from the different color schemes.

DESIGNER TIP | LAYERING ELEMENTS FOR ADDED DIMENSION

And now for some added dimension, just enough to catch your eye and add that extra layer of cuteness! I started with the chipboard journaling spot and added the floral spray, both from the Sticky Sparkly Glitter & Foil Set. Next I layered on the small little flower from the 3D Embellishment Kit. Don’t you just love how it looks?!

Let's Visit Chevron Background Paper

Hey everyone! Katrina Hunt here for my very first post on the 3 Birds Design blog and I am so excited to be here. I hope you are enjoying seeing the new collection “Graceful Season”. I know I have had fun creating projects to share with you.

If you read my design team bio, you know that my dogs are a big subject for my scrapbooking projects. So you have been warned that you will see a lot of them! I like to document some of the things we do with them and this layout does just that.

Katrina Hunt Lets Visit Scrapbook Page

TUTORIAL | CHEVRON BACKGROUND PAPER

I loved the chevron paper that is in the collection, but I wanted to add a little more color. I quickly measured and traced one of the larger chevrons and created a pattern to use from some scrap cardstock. I cut out the pattern and then traced it on the back side of the orange patterned paper and hand-cut the chevron shape.

Katrina Hunt Lets Visit Scrapbook Page

After I cut out the orange one, I figured out the placement of it on the background paper. Then, I decided that I needed to add another chevron for more “pop” and decided to use the black floral paper for another chevron. I used the same pattern and traced it onto the black floral paper and cut it out. Once I figured out the placement for both chevrons, I used foam adhesive to pop the layers up slightly.

Katrina Hunt Lets Visit Scrapbook PageOnce, my base background was finished, it was all about the fun of layering and embellishing. There are so many embellishments; I had trouble just picking a few. One trick I like to use (and you will see this a lot) is to stack multiple embellishments.

Katrina Hunt Lets Visit Scrapbook PageI loved this picture that I took of their pet therapy I.D. tags, and I wanted to show it close to the title. I did a mixture of the 6x6 pad, chipboard embellishments and the chipboard letters to create my title.
